How do you help families with school-aged children cope with life when a flood hits and devastates their homes and their lives? An organization was able to devise an answer to this question and as a result, was able to help hundreds of people, including children, get on with their lives and get an education after a disaster hit their homes. The answer and concrete help was provided by Rocketship Education or Rocketship Schools which help affected families tangibly.
When Coyote Creek burst at its seams on Feb. 20, its waters flooded and rushed into the surrounding homes. Rocketship Education was quick on the rescue and helped a Mexican immigrant family and other families that were badly affected by the flood. This organization has its base in California but it also has operations that benefit families in other states who are affected by calamities.
Rockesthip Education has around 20 schools in three states and also in Washington, D.C. The schools near that calamity area in Coyote Creek were immediately activated when the affected families began losing their food, furniture and their homes. Aside from food, clothing and household supplies, the families were also provided with cash for rentals for temporary housing. RE also quickly networked its activities with Catholic Charities. In the course of their rescue efforts, Rocketship Education was able to raise $62,000 to help the devastated families. More importantly, Rocketship was able to help the children continue their schooling and prevented them from getting sick and getting malnourished through the provisions that they gave their families.
In another aspect of its activities, Rocketship Education also empowers students through their teachers who have specialized in STEM. These are areas of critical studies that include Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Math. The teachers are also well-versed in humanities which rounds off their teaching specialization. In this respect, the teachers are encouraged to visit the homes of their students. As a result, they are able to familiarize themselves with the families of their students. In this way, they are able to personalize their method of teaching in a way that effectively helps their students to excel in their studies.
